Thousands evacuated as storm hits China: state media
Beijing (AFP) July 18, 2008 China evacuated 360,000 people and called 61,000 fishing boats back to shore as Tropical Storm Kalmaegi, which killed at least six people in Taiwan, hit the east coast, state media reported Friday. Kalmaegi made landfall in Fujian province at 6:10 pm (1010 GMT), packing winds of 90 kilometres (55 miles) an hour, Xinhua news agency said quoting the provincial meteorological station. The seventh severe storm this year, Kalmaegi, which had earlier been a typhoon, is also expected to affect Shanghai on Friday and Saturday, according to Xinhua.
