Three Chinese groups in bidding for Romanian dam project
by Staff Writers
Bucharest (AFP) Aug 11, 2015

Three Chinese consortia are bidding to build a hydro-electric dam in Romania worth an estimated one billion euros ($1.1 billion), the Hidro Tarnita company overseeing the project said Tuesday.

China Gezhouba Group, China Huadian Engineering and Huaneng Lancang River Hydropower have formed consortia with a view to building the dam on the Somes River in the northeast of the country.

They are the only bidders in a project for which Bucharest has sought investors for several years.

"The Tarnita-Lapustesti hydro-electric power station is a strategic project of national interest, (and) an investment in Romania's energy security," said Hidro Tarnita director Ovidiu Demetrescu.

The company said the project would create some 4,000 jobs.

Romania has concluded several energy cooperation accords with China since 2013.

China General Nuclear Power Corporation built two nuclear reactors in the eastern city of Cernavoda for an estimated 6.4 billion euros, while Huadian Engineering has signed an accord to build a thermo-electric power station in southeastern Rovinari worth about 1.0 billion euros.
