Travel firm sorry for Christchurch blunder

by Staff Writers
Sydney (AFP) Feb 23, 2011
An online travel company Wednesday apologised for emailing Australian clients a New Zealand promotion featuring an image of Christchurch Cathedral -- a landmark now badly damaged by a deadly earthquake.

Expedia said that the message alerting clients to a deal on hotel accommodation in New Zealand was put in place by its London team before the 6.3-magnitude quake hit the South Island city on Tuesday.

The email featured an image of an intact Christchurch Cathedral, a building that suffered extreme damage in the quake, including the loss of its spire, with victims reported trapped inside.

"Expedia sincerely apologises for the unfortunate timing of this communication, which was removed from our website as soon as we became aware of the contents," Australia and New Zealand general manager Nicolas Chu said.

"It goes without saying that we are extremely saddened about the devastation the earthquake has caused to Christchurch and Expedia apologises for any insensitivity towards the people of Christchurch, which of course was not our intention."
