A Turkish drone strike in northern Iraq killed at least one member of the Kurdish PKK group Thursday evening, officials from Iraqi Kurdistan announced.

"A Turkish drone targeted a vehicle belonging to the Kurdistan Workers' Party (PKK) in the Al-Nasr suburb" of Sinjar, killing one fighter and injuring two others, Iraqi Kurdistan's anti-terrorist service said in a statement.

Speaking on condition of anonymity, a source from within Sinjar's local administration claimed the strike resulted "in the death of a female member of the PKK and her driver".

Turkey and its Western allies classify the PKK as a "terrorist" group.

Northern Iraq has been the site of Turkish military bases for 25 years, and Ankara regularly launches military operations there against PKK insurgents operating in the area.

But civilians often find themselves on the front line.

Last July, nine people were killed in artillery strikes in Iraqi Kurdistan.

Iraq blamed neighbouring Turkey, which denied any responsibility.

Turkish military operations complicate relations between Baghdad and Ankara, one of Iraq's leading trading partners.

The Turkish ambassador stationed in Baghdad is regularly summoned to Iraq's Ministry of Foreign Affairs but such protests are generally short-lived.

50 countries at UN condemn Xinjiang rights abuses

Fifty countries on Monday signed onto a statement read during a UN debate that condemned the "severe and systematic" human rights violations in China's Xinjiang region. "We are gravely concerned about the human rights situation in the People's Republic of China, especially the ongoing human rights violations of Uyghurs and other predominantly Muslim minorities in Xinjiang," said the statement, read out by Canada during a debate of the UN General Assembly Third Committee, which handles human rights. ... read more
