Two more die in treacherous Canada snow: police

Avalanches claimed the lives of a skier and a snowboarder in separate incidents over the last 48 hours in the Canadian province of British Columbia, days after avalanches killed eight snowmobilers in the same region, police said on Friday.

A 37-year-old man died Wednesday after being struck by an avalanche as he skied off piste in the Whistler Mountain resort north of Vancouver, the Royal Canadian Mounted Police (RCMP) said in a statement.

On Thursday, a 26-year-old snowboarder, also in an area closed off due to dangerous snow conditions, died after being buried by an avalanche.

The victims' names were not released pending notification of their families, the RCMP said.

"These tragic incidents emphasize the need for skiers and boarders to respect and obey all boundary markers and warnings," said the police, adding that the avalanche danger is currently rated as "high."

The accidents come days after eight experienced snowmobilers were buried by a series of avalanches in the Canadian Rocky Mountains in British Columbia.

As Dutch ice-skaters made the most of the lowest December temperatures in 12 years, authorities announced Wednesday it would be deploying a ship to break up ice in the port of Rotterdam.
