The U.S. Army's 1st Combat Aviation Brigade, based in Fort Riley, Kan., will deploy to Europe in April in a troop rotation, the Army announced on Monday. The 1st CAB, an element of the 1st Infantry Division, was most recently in Europe in 2019, when it supported nine large-scale exercises and worked with the armies of 21 partner nations. It will replace the 101st Airborne Division's 101st Combat Aviation Brigade, which will return to its Fort Campbell, Ky., home after a nine-month deployment. The U.S. units support Operation Atlantic Resolve operations with troops and equipment largely based in Germany and temporary deployments to Latvia, Romania and Poland. The mission was established in 2014 after the Russian intervention in Ukraine. The 1st CAB consists of a Headquarters company, a 1st Battalion of five companies, a 2nd Battalion of six companies, a heavy attack and reconnaissance squadron and a support squadron. The troop rotation is among the first actions since the U.S. Army combined its headquarters for European and African missions in November 2020. The new command, U.S. Army Europe and Africa is now the Army service component command for both U.S. European Command and U.S. Africa Command, but Army noted on Monday that the 1st CAB deployment will exclusively involve Europe. "The Demon Brigade is excited about our rotation back to Europe," said Col. Bryan Chivers, 1st CAB commander. "We look forward to strengthening our long-standing partnership with our allies and partners, reaffirming the United States' commitment to NATO."
