US, Russian spacemen take spacewalk: mission control
Moscow (AFP) March 10, 2009 A Russian cosmonaut and a US colleague ventured out of the International Space Station Tuesday on a spacewalk to install an experiment, make repairs and take pictures, a mission official said. Cosmonaut Yury Lonchakov and astronaut Mike Fincke completed their tasks one hour ahead of schedule, finishing their spacewalk in four hours and 50 minutes, said Russian mission control spokeswoman Valery Lyndin. "We have interesting objectives today," Lonchakov said before floating out for his second spacewalk since arriving at the ISS with Fincke in October. "We have to install European equipment, we have repair work and we must take photos of different parts of the ISS," he said. The spacewalkers installed a European experiment, known as Expose-R, that will be used to observe how certain organic molecules react to solar radiation. They also took pictures of the exterior of the Russian part of the station to document its condition after a decade exposed to the harsh environment of space, NASA said on its website. Expedition 18 Ready To Take A Walk
Houston TX (SPX) Mar 10, 2009Aboard the orbiting International Space Station Monday, the Expedition 18 crew had a bit of down time. After Sunday's suited fit check of their Orlan spacesuits, Commander Mike Fincke and Flight Engineer Yury Lonchakov relaxed Monday in advance of their spacewalk slated to begin at 12:20 p.m. EDT Tuesday. Lonchakov, the lead spacewalker or EV 1, will wear the Orlan suit with the blue stripes. |
