New Horizons Set For A Comfortable Cruise Out To Jupiter And Pluto Transfer
Pasadena CA (SPX) Feb 13, 2006
NASA's New Horizons spacecraft is proceeding according to plan on its way to Pluto and the outer planets via an encounter with Jupiter next year. The following is an update from the mission's principal investigator, S. Alan Stern:

Questioning Pluto
Moffett Field CA (SPX) Feb 09, 2006
The New Horizons mission to Pluto launched on January 19, 2006. Over the next nine years it will speed through space, heading toward the very edge of our solar system. After a flyby of Pluto and its moon Charon, scientists hope to further investigate the mysterious icy objects that make up the Kuiper Belt.

New Outer Planet Is Larger Than Pluto
Bonn, Germany (SPX) Feb 05, 2006
Claims that the Solar System has a tenth planet are bolstered by the finding by a group led by Bonn astrophysicists that this alleged planet, announced last summer, and tentatively named 2003 UB313, is bigger than Pluto.

Planet X Found To Be Larger Than Pluto
Bonn, Germany (SPX) FEB 1, 2006
German astrophysicists have measured the planetary body called UB313 that orbits beyond Pluto and have found it is the bigger of the two. By measuring its thermal emission, the scientists were able to determine its diameter is about 3000 kilometers, or about 700 km larger than Pluto.

New Horizon On Course For Jupiter Transfer To Pluto And Beyond
Laurel MD (SPX) Feb 01, 2006
New Horizons is nearing completion of its second week in flight, and all continues to go well. As Project Manger Glen Fountain is proud of saying, New Horizons is now safely away from Earth, in the cold vacuum she was born to thrive in.

New Horizons Successfully Performs First Post-Launch Maneuvers
Laurel MD (SPX) Feb 01, 2006
NASA's New Horizons spacecraft has successfully carried out its first post-launch maneuvers, conducting two small thruster firings that slightly adjusted its path toward the outer solar system and the first close-up study of distant planet Pluto.

On The Road To Pluto At Last
Baltimore MD (SPX) Jan 24, 2006
New Horizons is en route to Pluto. I was told at a post-launch party down in Cocoa Beach that our launch came 5 years to the day from the date NASA released the Pluto-Kuiper Belt mission Announcement of Opportunity (AO) that resulted in our selection to build and launch New Horizons. Amazing!

The PI's Perspective 24 Hours After Launch: It Worked!
Boulder CO (SPX) Jan 23, 2006
"It Worked." Those are the words that form the last entry in my project notebook for the day of launch. Now, a day later, the spacecraft is already undergoing checkouts, and has been de-spun from its launch rotation rate of 68 RPMs to just under 20 RPMs.

LockMart Thermoelectric Generator Powers NASA Pluto New Horizons Probe
Valley Forge PA (SPX) Jan 20, 2006
A Radioisotope Thermoelectric Generator (RTG), built by Lockheed Martin at its Space Systems Company facility in Valley Forge, then fueled by the U.S. Department of Energy (DOE), is providing electric power for NASA's Pluto New Horizons spacecraft.

NASA Delays Pluto Probe Launch Again
Washington DC (SPX) Jan 19, 2006
NASA has postponed the launch of its New Horizons Pluto probe "for at least one more day" due to a power outage at the laboratory managing the mission, the US space agency said Wednesday.

NASA Launches Spacecraft To Pluto, The Kuipers And Stars Beyond
Washington DC (SPX) Jan 19, 2006
NASA on Thursday launched a trailblazing probe to Pluto, at the solar system's outermost limits, after two days of delays.

Spacecraft Bound For Pluto Supported By Aerojet Propulsion
Sacramento CA (SPX) Jan 20, 2006
Aerojet provided the solid rocket power needed for launching the Lockheed Martin Atlas V launch vehicle and its Pluto New Horizons spacecraft earlier Thursday from Cape Canaveral, Fla. Aerojet's five solid rocket boosters (SRBs) provided the added thrust to get the New Horizons spacecraft to Pluto - the solar system's most distant planet.
