The New Horizons mission to Pluto launched on January 19, 2006. Over the next nine years it will speed through space, heading toward the very edge of our solar system. After a flyby of Pluto and its moon Charon, scientists hope to further investigate the mysterious icy objects that make up the Kuiper Belt.
New Outer Planet Is Larger Than Pluto

Claims that the Solar System has a tenth planet are bolstered by the finding by a group led by Bonn astrophysicists that this alleged planet, announced last summer, and tentatively named 2003 UB313, is bigger than Pluto.
Planet X Found To Be Larger Than Pluto

German astrophysicists have measured the planetary body called UB313 that orbits beyond Pluto and have found it is the bigger of the two. By measuring its thermal emission, the scientists were able to determine its diameter is about 3000 kilometers, or about 700 km larger than Pluto.

New Horizons is en route to Pluto. I was told at a post-launch party down in Cocoa Beach that our launch came 5 years to the day from the date NASA released the Pluto-Kuiper Belt mission Announcement of Opportunity (AO) that resulted in our selection to build and launch New Horizons. Amazing!

"It Worked." Those are the words that form the last entry in my project notebook for the day of launch. Now, a day later, the spacecraft is already undergoing checkouts, and has been de-spun from its launch rotation rate of 68 RPMs to just under 20 RPMs.
