Taiwan said Monday it hoped the United States would continue its arms sales despite friction over a likely decision by the island to resume a ban on some US beef imports. "We hope the Unites States will keep offering defensive weapons to the Republic of China," defence ministry spokesman Yu Sy-tue told AFP, referring to Taiwan by its official name. He was commenting on reports that Washi ... read more

Politically correct food on the menu in Britain
London (AFP) Dec 30, 2009
From foie gras produced without making birds suffer to "sustainable" fish, British retailers and restaurants are fast embracing politically correct food, helped by celebrity-fuelled pressure. Faux (false) gras is the ethical answer to the foodstuff which has been the bane of campaigners for decades for the way it's produced: force-feeding ducks or geese to create engorged livers that yield the creamy pate. Waitrose, House of Fraser and Tesco are among a growing number of major British retailers who are now refusing to stock real foie gras after protest campaigns. ... more

Annual income of Chinese farmers hits record high: media
Beijing (AFP) Dec 28, 2009
The average annual income of Chinese farmers hit a record 5,000 yuan (732 dollars) this year as increased demand for migrant workers saw more money sent back to rural areas, state media reported Monday. The per capita net income of farmers rose more than six percent in 2009 from a year ago, Xinhua news agency said, citing a statement issued by the central government's annual conference on rural policies. The increase was partly driven by a recovery in demand for migrant workers, the report said, as factories and construction companies started hiring again in response to improved economic conditions. ... more

Low yield, strikes hit Argentine fisheries
Buenos Aires (UPI) Dec 31, 2009
Amid worries over Argentina's agricultural sales abroad, Argentine fisheries have been hit by falling exports and prospects of ever decreasing yields because of decline in marine life in the country's waters, industry scientists said. Added to those long-term setbacks for Argentina's natural resources, the fisheries trade is also hit by labor disputes, strikes and a spillover of discont ... more

Beijing (AFP) Jan 1, 2010
A Chinese dairy shut down during the 2008 tainted milk scandal has been closed again after tests found some of its products contained the same toxic chemical, state media reported Friday. Shanghai Panda Dairy was shuttered and three executives arrested Thursday after an investigation found eight batches of its powdered milk and condensed milk had "illegally high" levels of melamine, the Shan ... more
