Whales, Tuna And The Clash Of Civilizations
Tokyo (RIA Novosti) Mar 23, 2010
On March 12, Pete Bethune, captain of the Ady Gil, an anti-whaling boat belonging to the Sea Shepherd Conservation Society, was arrested for illegally boarding a Japanese ship. The arrest was the logical outcome of Western environmentalists' war against Japanese whalers in the Antarctic this season. The Ady Gil collided with the Japanese whaling security ship Shonan Maru No. 2 in January. Later the environmentalists threw bottles of butyric acid at the whaling ship Yushin Maru No. 3. The Last Hurrah For El Nino 2010
Pasadena CA (JPL) Mar 22, 2010
El Nino 2009-2010 just keeps hanging in there. Recent sea-level height data from the NASA/European Ocean Surface Topography Mission/Jason-2 oceanography satellite show that a large-scale, sustained weakening of trade winds in the western and central equatorial Pacific during late-January through February has triggered yet another strong, eastward-moving wave of warm water, known as a Kelvin wave ... more

Water: Battery-power desalination offers hope to parched areas
Paris (AFP) March 21, 2010
Scientists said on Sunday they had made a nanotech device to strip salt from seawater, paving the way to small-scale or even battery-powered desalination for drought-hit regions and disaster zones. The tiny prototype is reported on the eve of the UN's World Water Day, which aims to highlight the worsening problems of access to clean water. Conventional desalination works by forcing water ... more

Washington (UPI) Mar 18, 2009
The U.S. Agricultural Research Service says it is getting ready to make public a newly developed variety of lentil called Essex. The service, a part of the U.S. Department of Agriculture, says Essex offers high seed yields for growers, nitrogen-fixing bacteria for wheat crops and a tasty source of protein for consumers to add to soups, salads and other fare. The lentil variety was developed by plant geneticist George Vandemark, who leads the ARS Grain Legume Genetics and Physiology Resea ... read more
