Brazil searches for dead, for answers as flood toll climbs
Niteroi, Brazil (AFP) April 10, 2010
Rescuers raced against time Saturday amid fading hopes of finding survivors of a huge mudslide, with over 400 people now feared dead in some of the worst flooding to swamp Brazil in decades. Rescuers painstakingly pulled bodies from the thick mound of dirt and debris in the Niteroi shantytown of Morro do Bumba late Friday and Saturday, bringing the death toll to 223. Another 200 people were feared to have been buried alive in the slum, itself precariously perched atop a garbage dump in this city ... read more

Dushanbe (AFP) April 6, 2010
UN Secretary General Ban Ki-moon on Tuesday urged restraint in a growing dispute between Uzbekistan and Tajikistan over the fate of a massive Tajik hydro-electric dam project. Ban, in Tajikistan as part of a tour through ex-Soviet Central Asia, said he was "deeply concerned" over the dispute, which has seen Uzbekistan block rail shipments to its impoverished neighbour. "All parties conce ... more

Fishing banned at Sea of Galilee
Jerusalem, April 3, 2010
The biblical tradition of fishing in the Sea of Galilee has been suspended by Israeli officials who say the waters have been overfished. The Ministry of Agriculture recently announced a 2-year ban on fishing that will take effect at the end of April and allow the ancient fishery to regenerate. "We need to stop fishing to give the small fish a chance to grow, causing fish stocks t ... more

Fishermen left high and dry fear for Mekong's future
Vientiane (AFP) April 4, 2010
Fisherman Phimmalang Sengphet paddles his boat to the sandy banks of the Mekong River in Laos and inspects his meagre haul. "We can't even catch enough to feed ourselves," he says wearily. The 38-year-old was able to net more than 10 kilos (22 pounds) of fish a day this time last year, but now he is lucky to bring home just half that. He blames the unusually low water levels - the most extr ... more

Researchers Look At Reducing Yield Loss For Crops Under Stress
Ames IA (SPX) Apr 06, 2010
People feel it, animals feel it, and yes, plants sense it too. It's stress. Plant researchers are taking a long look at stress in order to improve crop productivity, especially when faced with issues of climate change. "Imagine what a plant goes through when it hasn't rained for over a week and it's feeling dry - its leaves are wilting," says Stephen Howell, professor of genetics, development and cell biology at Iowa State University's Plant Sciences Institute. "Add in some strong afternoon sunshi ... read more
