Libreville (AFP) Sept 17, 2010
Non-governmental organisations have called for a biodiversity centre to be set up in Africa to study species and control their exploitation, on the sidelines of a pan-African ministerial meeting. "On behalf of civil society, we insisted on the establishment of a regional African centre on biodiversity" when experts met in Gabon from Monday to Wednesday, ahead of the ministerial conference, Nicaise Moulombi, the head of the High Council of Non State Parties, told AFP on Friday. The Predictable Events Of The February Earthquake In Chile
Potsdam, Germany (SPX) Sep 14, 2010
The complex fracture pattern created by the earthquake in Concepcion (Chile) on 27 February 2010 was to a certain extent predictable. GPS observations from the years before the earthquake showed the pattern of stresses that had accumulated through the plate movements during the past 175 years in this area. Supernova Shrapnel Found In Meteorite
Chicago IL (SPX) Sep 13, 2010
Scientists have identified the microscopic shrapnel of a nearby star that exploded just before or during the birth of the solar system 4.5 billion years ago. Faint traces of the supernova, found in a meteorite, account for the mysterious variations in the chemical fingerprint of chromium found from one planet and meteorite to another. University of Chicago cosmochemist Nicolas Dauphas and eight co-authors report their finding in the Sept. 10, 2010, issue of the Astrophysical Journal. Scienti ... read more
